Over the past few years, special features have occupied the Google SERPs. While they are difficult to acquire, they grant an unprecedented visibility to a website. For many sites, a Featured Snippet is a top result they are aiming for, but for local companies, it is all about the Local Pack.

The Local Pack is a block of information in the top of the SERP containing a map and a list of three local businesses most relevant to the search. On mobile devices, Local Packs occupy the whole SERP, granting the businesses listed there a unique chance to get more customers.

Together with Tim Capper, a local SEO pro from the UK and the founder of Online Ownership, we created a guide for local SEO specialists that describes every step of getting into the Local Pack.

  • Did you know that the Local Pack features Google My Business listings, not websites?
  • Do you know how to manage local citations?
  • Do you know how to use structured data markup for your specific type of business?

You will find the answers to these and many other questions in this post. Keep reading!

What will you learn from this guide?

Here are the steps that you need to take:

How to get into the Local Pack: step by step guide

Local Packs are different from other SERP features; to get there, a company needs a Google My Business page. More than that, this page requires optimization, which is different from the regular SEO optimization of a website.

In the first chapter, you will learn what Google My Business pages are, how to create and verify them, how they should be optimized to be listed in the Local Pack, and how to manage brand name citations.

The second chapter is all about your website optimization. In order to help your business rank highly in local organic search, your site should be healthy and reliable, contain the necessary local information, and have backlinks from locally authoritative resources.

In addition to that, you can use the structured data markup to help Google bots index your site properly. In the Appendix of this guide, we have included 7 different HTML templates that you can personalize and use on your website.

In the third chapter, you can see how to track the results of your local SEO campaigns, see what keywords trigger Local Packs, and which of these you have already won.
