As a content marketer, engagement is money; the more traffic, pageviews and engagement you can get, the more money you can make.

The reality, however, is that boosting engagement, traffic and pageviews is easier said than done. Thankfully, we have research – lots of studies and research have been conducted to determine what generates traffic, and this article will be sharing content and promotion tweaks you can make that will increase your pageviews, traffic and engagement.

Publish More Content

In their blogging frequency benchmark study, an analysis of over 13,500 businesses, Hubspot set out to find out the right frequency for publishing articles as well as the role this can have on traffic and leads, and the result was shocking: apparently, following expert bloggers’ advice to publish “high-quality” content only when you have something really important to say is scientifically flawed.

The Hubspot study found that by publishing 16 or more blog posts monthly, you can expect to get 3.5 times more traffic and 4.5 times more leads than people who publish less than four blog posts monthly.

As you can see, content frequency also plays a major role in blog traffic; increasing the number of blog posts you publish can increase your traffic by up to 3.5 times, and in the process boosting your sales and conversions.

Publish a Resource Article

If you want to unleash an avalanche of traffic on your blog, then it is absolutely important not to ignore resource articles. In an article on Inbound.org, popular blogger Bamidele Onibalusi revealed how he has been able to get over 100,000 views per article, repeatedly. He included three case studies to back up his point. What Onibalusi did was investigate his readers’ pain points and then give them resources that address these pain points. The result was a predictable and consistent increase in traffic.

Resources tend to get shared and ranked well. Just imagine how much of a difference 100,000 extra visitors will make to your ad revenue.

Here are some tips for when you publish your resource article:

  • Make sure it addresses your readers’ pain points.

  • Make sure it is specific; a resource should ideally only address one pain point.

  • Make sure it isn’t too generic; obviously a resource about the “top search engines,” or “top social media sites,” is so overdone today that doing one will yield little to no results for you.

Publish a List Article

Another article type that works really well other than the resource article is a list article. List articles are so effective that, in its analysis of over 100 million articles, Buzzsumo found it to be the most shared type of content after infographics. The average list post got thousands of extra shares, and as a result, it had more traffic compared to the next closest popular article to it.

As far as list posts are concerned, research shows that 10 is the magic number; a list of 10 items will usually outperform a list of other numbers. In fact, the Buzzsumo study found that a list featuring 10 items will usually get at least four times as many shares as the second most popular type of list (lists featuring 23 items).

If you’ve been publishing list posts already on your blog, keep it up. If not, revise your strategy.

Start an Email List

Millionaire blogger Neil Patel reports that email is one of the most effective things he does to increase traffic to his site — affecting every facet of his site and brand, even to the point of indirectly helping his SEO.

There are so many advantages to starting an email list; for one, you get consistently recurring traffic. Also, all things being equal, your email list will only keep growing — leading to eventually more traffic, and as a result more ad revenue, for your brand down the line.

The good news about doing email marketing is that it doesn’t have to be complicated or stressful; many top bloggers like Neil Patel automate email promotion of their blog posts. Most email service software allows for automation (I did review a few!) so getting started can be very quick and simple.

Reshare Old Articles on Social Media

Resharing old articles on social media is also one of the most effective ways to boost traffic and pageviews. Many bloggers and content producers make the mistake of sharing and promoting their content once. This can be a very costly mistake as evidenced by research.

Research shows that resharing old posts can boost engagement by up to 686 percent!

Both on Twitter and Facebook, as well as on other social media sites, take measures to automate consistent promotion and resharing of old articles. Many new people will see your article after each reshare, and this will go a long way to boost traffic and pageviews on your site.

Appeal to Positive Emotion

As a content marketer, virality can have such a positive impact on your bottom line. Unfortunately, many people wrongly assume that negative content is most likely to go viral. That’s wrong.

Research by professors at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School found that positive content is more likely to go viral than negative content. No wonder motivational speakers are usually very popular!

Make sure to occasionally create positive, motivational content — and watch your content viewership and engagement soar in the process.

Regularly Publish Infographics

I earlier referenced a Buzzsumo study that shows that list posts are the most shared content types after infographics. Infographics are the most shared content types by a far margin, gaining thousands of extra shares over list posts on average.

Multimedia is playing more of a key role in content today than ever before, and infographics are currently the most popular form of multimedia content. If you’re yet to start using infographics on your site, it’s not too late to start.
